Intravenous Infusions

Updated on Sep 8, 2021 by Dr. Amr Hosny (Headache Specialist) of Advanced Headache Center

What are Intravenous Infusions?

Intravenous Infusions occur when a group of medications is sent directly into your veins using a needle or a tube.

Many patients prefer not to rely on painkillers or narcotic medication to ease headaches and gravitate towards safe and painless infusion therapy.

Infusions for headaches reduce headache pain and frequency and assist patients in weaning off of medication if currently on it.

Infusions often consist of magnesium which is known to produce safe and effective headache relief. Infusions can give fast relief through a blend of medications designed to simultaneously treat pain, nausea, and inflammation.

The drugs used in headache infusions target the proteins that initiate the cascade of events that cause migraines. The infusion subdues the overactive nerve endings to calm the irritation that initiates a migraine or headache. The treatments have been shown to remain effective for as long as one month after the treatment or longer depending on the individual.
